Introduction

First on the list of classic hits is undoubtedly “Le quattro stagioni,” and for a great reason! Our innovative Contratemps version of Vivaldi’s famous Seasons “is a river of inventiveness, originality and light”! (Núvol). In one hour of music, we present movements from the original Seasons, but our unique instrumentation (adding flutes, oboe, viola da gamba, and voice), along with live painting, bring out the animal sounds, storms, and celebrations that Vivaldi so wanted to portray. Additionally, we’ve included arias and movements from other Vivaldi concertos that sound eerily familiar; in fact, he copied from time to time and several themes we now know from the Seasons, he originally composed for other earlier operas or concerts, such as the first movement of “la primavera”, which is very similar to a symphony from his earlier opera Il Giustino. Duration: 70 minutes

An operatic pasticcio fully aligned with the spirit of the time.. This new vision, sometimes crazy, sometimes melancholic, encouraged the audience to throw off the mental corset and simply let themselves be carried away by this river of inventiveness, originality and light!

Musical Colours

Inspired by Vivaldi’s musical colors, a painter shares the stage with the Contratemps ensemble as he literally paints the seasons with color, accompanying the interpretation of Vivaldi’s legendary music with a visual treat created especially for this concert, in real time.

While the musicians perform the dynamic and emotive melodies, the painter works in sync with the music, letting himself be carried away by the rhythm and the emotions it evokes. Each station transforms into colours and shapes as the music progresses, reflecting the vibe and atmosphere of each movement.

This artistic fusion allows viewers to see how the music materialises in four works of art, capturing the feelings and stories that Vivaldi wanted to convey with his compositions. The painter’s strokes can be soft, fluid, intense or dramatic according to the filter of the emotions felt by the artist during the passages of Vivaldi’s work. This experience proposes a deep connection with the musical work, hoping to enrich the perception of the audience.

The music includes not only selections from the original Seasons, but also striking selections from Vivaldi’s concertos for viola da gamba or harpsichord and arias from Vivaldi’s operas, which sound eerily familiar. The essence of each of Vivaldi’s original seasons remains, but with variations, mimicking the small changes we experience in each year’s cycle.
